Below is an excerpt from the introduction of our newest e-book, What is Truth? A Primer for Exploring Foundations of Knowledge in Worldview Analysis. Written by Executive Director Doug Monroe, this Praxis Circle resource is intended to make the reader aware of the fundamental building blocks that make up the concept of truth and why a proper understanding of truth is important to everyday life.

What is truth? This deceptively simple question has puzzled humanity since the beginning. In every culture, across every age, people have sought to understand what it means for something to be true. In our modern world, where information is abundant and perspectives are diverse, the quest for truth becomes even more vital and complex.

I have been pursuing an answer to this question through the work of Praxis Circle, the non-profit organization at which I serve as executive director. The tagline for our organization is that “Praxis Circle is a community building worldviews to renew a free and good society.” A view toward truth is pivotal to every worldview. America and the West are experiencing worldview or “culture wars” centering on the issue of truth. Whether we can ever unite again under a common vision is a pivotal issue.

Understanding worldviews fundamentally is primal, and it involves grappling with how each worldview regards truth and then with what different individuals and cultures hold as true. By examining truth, we can better understand the underlying principles that shape various worldviews, allowing for more meaningful and constructive dialogue. In this way, the pursuit of truth not only clarifies our own perspectives, it also fosters greater empathy and insight into the diverse ways others see the world.

For those interested in delving deeper into the concept of worldviews, I recommend my previous booklet, What is a Worldview? which we created to serve as a comprehensive resource for exploring worldviews and how they are formed. This booklet builds on those ideas to specifically address the element of worldview formation that is truth.

Perhaps you are reading this booklet because the concept of truth intrigues you, and you want a deeper dive. Maybe you encountered situations where differing “truths” clashed, leaving you confused or curious. If so, welcome! Though we cannot have this discussion face-to-face, this booklet aims to guide you through an enlightening exploration of truth.

In true Praxis Circle fashion, this booklet is structured as a dialogue. Each chapter features interviews with members of our community, ranging from experts and scholars who have deeply studied the nature of truth, to thoughtful individuals encountering these ideas for the first time. These conversations will offer a variety of perspectives and insights into the multifaceted nature of truth.

While space only allows for excerpts of these conversations, full-length interviews are available on our website and YouTube channel. The excerpts have been edited for length and clarity, but links to the complete discussions are provided for those who wish to delve deeper.

Each interview is followed by my commentary, where I respond to the interviewer’s points and share my own thoughts on the subject. This conversation is organized around key questions that drive our understanding of truth:

  1. What is truth?
  2. How can we experience truth?
  3. What is the power of truth?
  4. Why is engaging truth so challenging?

The pursuit of truth is a continuous journey, not a final destination. If you are inspired to learn more, additional resources are available throughout this booklet and on our website.

Understanding truth is crucial because what we believe about the world shapes how we live within it. To navigate life effectively, our minds and actions must align with what is real. Only then can we address life’s greatest questions and interact more meaningfully with those around us. So, let’s embark on this journey together.
